We are starting to get quite a collection of incorrect signs which have been highlighted on this website.

We had the Shanklin/Sandown path "KEEP DOGS ON LEADS" signs which although  installed by the council,  the information was completely false as there wasn't any such requirement, they are unaware of the legal authority under which they randomly erected the signs and for the last five years they have not even attempted to enforce the "Dogs on leads" rule, which they accidentally misinformed the public over, but they were under the impression was correct all along!

Just recently we have had the Puckpool Sea-Wall Sign which states that "CYCLING IS PROHIBITED ALONG PROMENADE AND FOOTPATH" although according to the council it isn't prohibited on the promenade at all."The upper sea wall has no official designation in terms of highway law and, therefore, cyclists are not committing an offence"

And of course who could possibly forget the Appley dog ban signs, a saga which saw the council denying the signs were incorrect over a period of sixteen months, until they finally admitted they were wrong and made a £250 "Time and Trouble" payment, which is used to fund this website.

Keep your eyes peeled for any other erroneous signs on the island and we will investigate

Now this one isn't actually incorrect, in fact the complete opposite is the case as it couldn't be more correct.

It is so blatantly stating the obvious that I have never understood quite why it was ever erected, but it always gets a wry smile from me whenever I pass it at the Appley car park in Ryde. In fact you would have to drive along the sea front to get to the car park in the first place. So wouldn't it be self evident where the beach was even if you couldn't plainly see it from the car park.

A relic of a bygone age when the council would waste money with no consideration for common sense.

Well if they are watching them why don't they do something about it?

With all the CCTV cameras apparently watching us all the time I find myself wondering  just how often the authorities are actually reviewing live what is going on out there?
Perhaps we should attempt to find out. One thing we do know is that between 2007 and 2010 the Isle of Wight council spent  £1,483,729 on CCTV. Yes thats not a mistake nearly £1.5 million!

A PDF with a lot more info on this can be downloaded here

Now then, I bet I know what your reaction to this one is

You'll be thinking that you cant get fined for your dog being in the sea, as it only counts on the beach.

But I received a Fixed Penalty Notice for having my dog on an excluded beach when he was actually walking in the shallow sea. Which was the only fine issued by the dog wardens on a Ryde beach for that year.

Even though the legislation actually states that it applies to land open to the air, this apparently doesn't  apply on the Isle of Wight, and even though the councils own dog warden said my dog and I were 50 yards out from the sea-wall, according to the Ryde Harbour Master,  the council and the Local Government Ombudsman the tide was actually fully in at the time I was issued with the fine, so we therefore must have been swimming in the sea Read more here.

This one is just plain daft, how could they possibly know?

If you were discreet about it, it would be all over and you would be well away from the area before the council had even registered it. And another thing if the councils enforcing officers only managed to issue one Fixed penalty Notice for dog fouling in a whole year I really don't see how, with a performance record like that, they stand a hope in hell of catching someone letting one go.

Thanks to Iain for pointing this sign out

Ive been taking to the footpaths recently and I have noticed on my travels that the council have been busy erecting new signposts on various routes, as can be seen in the picture.

Very nice too I'm sure but unfortunately this isnt Spencer Road its Ladies Walk.
