As from September 2010, if the council gets its way, Pell Lane rec will be handed over to the new Ryde Secondary School for use as building land or playing fields.  They've kept the information very quiet, hidden away in 'New School Competition' proposals.

The result would be to deny access to all the current users, whether they be dog walkers, kite fliers, cricketers or picnickers, or just people who like to wander around and look at the Solent.  The only ones who might remain are footballers.

The rec has been a public open space since at least 1952, when the Borough of Ryde rented it for the residents. If it was necessary then, it's even more so today, with hundreds more people around.  It's also one of the less-fouled areas, according to the ENOs.

The council states that it is 'acceptable' to transfer the land; what they mean is that it's legal, thanks to Parliament wiping away protection given by covenants.  If you think it's unacceptable, please question any candidates in the local elections what they're going to do about the rec.  You can also write or email one of the school re-organisation chaps at County Hall, Alex Moffat, alex.moffat@iow.gov.uk , with your objections.  As mentioned elsewhere on this site, together we could stand a chance.

So who exactly who are they serving?

Its supposed to be us.

I will certainly be sending in my views and will be making it perfectly clear that this is not acceptable to me.

Dog owners are kicked off the beaches throughout the summer, even though they are empty up until the summer holidays, and there is absolutely no reason why we should not be able to use the beaches before 9 in the morning all year round.

Public parks such as Appley park in Ryde are dangerous to use during the summer months due to this council running it as a golf course! Yet somehow it gets awarded a Green Flag even though the primary criterionfor this is supposedly public safety. Any other park and the councils job is to stop people whacking golf balls about, yet here they actively encourage it.

As far as I'm concerned Pell Lane Rec. has become a final refuge, and losing it will be the straw that breaks the camels back.

                      FIGHT FOR IT!!!

Well well well, green land going again!

As to Appley Park golf gourse(!) Isla likes nothing more than to round up golf balls and running off with them. People may complain, but ,hey, it is a PUBLIC area and she has as much right to roam as anyone else.

Whilst I'm ranting , what the hell are beach football goals doing on the only dog part of Ryde beach, another fine piece of organisation.

My other and final rant is the misleading signs re dog fouling. Some otf the signs state the maximum penalty is £100 whilst others state £1000, who knows which is correct?

Re: Appley Park.

I wonder how many people are aware that my dog was attacked and hit across the spine with a golf club, about 18 months ago, whilst i was was walking one evening before dark. Luckily there was no serious injury to my dog, but for me, the memory will never go, nor the fear i have when golfers are around.

The police were not interested in the slightest !! after all, only a "dog" was hit not a person!!

I have been a dog owner all my life and lived on the island for over 40 years and I have never found the need to walk any of my dogs on Pell rec. After all it is set aside for football and other sports/recreation. If it is given to the school at least we know it is going to be put to good use and that it is not going to become another building estate. If you continue a little further along Play Lane you come to Binstead common. Which I think is a much better environment to walk my dog.

You dont walk your dog at the rec therefore nobody else should.
